Do it Yourself of Not?

Many people like to be hands on with their home improvement. The general consensus is that when you do it yourself, you save money. While in certain situations this can be true, in most you may be losing money in the long run. If you aren’t certain whether you can do home improvement properly, you should hire a professional. Taking shortcuts can result in many problems down the road.

Here are some examples of situations where you would want to hire a professional:

Tiles – Tiles require correct underlayment, subfloor, and suitable subcountertop to install. The tile quantities that one needs for a job depend on the tile layout. Many DIY enthusiasts miscalculate quantitys and leftovers cannot always be returned.

Cabinets –  These might look easy to install, but there are a lot details involved. Cabinets need to be leveled so future counters can be leveled.  All these require specific tools that makes this project very expensive. Wall cabinets need to be securely and properly installed to assure that they will stay on the wall once loaded up with heavy plates.

Plumbing –  There are many costs involved when pipes are starting to leak. A major hassle with plumbing is the soldering of pipes. This takes a lot of time, preparation, and equipment. If you don’t do it right, you are risking leaky pipes which create mold that is very bad for your health and very expensive to remove.

Electrical Work –  You definitely want to hire a professional when working on electrical projects at home. If these aren’t completed the right way, the results can be life threatening.

This doesn’t mean you should bring in the handyman for some home improvement jobs. There are many you can do yourself. We actually encourage you to learn about your home and the proper maintenance it requires. Knowing how to do it yourself is a great quality to have.  There are many simple projects you can work on. Some possible DIY projects would be the demolition of existing cabinets (although dumping fees are still expensive), repurposing your garage, installing light fixtures, adding final decorative touches (ie: painting).

Being hands on with your home is great, but know when to call someone in. Save yourself long term money, time, research, and the inevitable headache. Hire someone you trust. Of course, you can always call Bradco. Bradco does not perform any contracting service, since it is a retail store. ONLY B&R Construction performs contracting work.

Yelp Review By Rina P.

If I could give Michael and his associates at Bradco 6 stars instead of 5, I would. We gutted our kitchen completely and now have an AMAZING, custom built kitchen, all thanks to Michael. We actually did the remodel almost a year ago exactly, but I have been too busy cooking to post on Yelp!

The designer at Bradco that we worked with was beyond patient- supplying my husband and I with every price option for every cabinet option known to man. I am 100% a bargain shopper, but I also wanted the best quality for my money. Here, let me just number all the wonderfulness for you:

1. Instead of choosing a stock cabinet from another company, Michael worked with us and crunched the numbers to be able to offer us CUSTOM made (I’m talking color, design, wood type, everything!) cabinets that he has made in his very own factory. We got solid wood (no mdf), formaldehyde-free, eco-friendly cabinets for only $2k more than omega brand stock stuff. I’m pretty sure that’s unheard of in the world of custom cabinetry.

2. We keep fully kosher and were trying to fit 2 huge sinks, 2 dishwashers, and 2 ovens all into a kitchen that previously had 1 of everything, without knocking down any walls. The design team at bradco were able to fit everything in while maintaining a beautiful, modern, and symmetric look to the kitchen.

3. When we had our final quote from Bradco for both the materials and the construction, I showed that quote to several contractors, ALL of whom said they couldn’t beat Bradco’s price.

4.When construction began, Eli (the foreman) and Jose (the head guy) were excellent in every regard. They essentially created a plastic-covered walkway in and out of the house to minimize dust and mess. Jose and his team showed up when they said they would (they always asked me when they could come- would 8 am be ok? 7:30?) and left at appropriate times in the afternoon. None of this banging on my door at 6 am or meandering around past dinnertime making noise. I trust Jose completely and would leave him a key when I was out. I even asked him to babysit my kids, but no such luck (yet!)

5. When things didn’t fit or there were questions, Michael would appear out of thin air to help me. Yes, the OWNER would show up at my house and crawl under the sink and tinker and mumble until everything was fixed and I was happy. How’s that for personalized service?!

6. It’s been a year and I still walk into my kitchen and smile- not only because it’s beautiful and functional beyond belief, but because the experience of gutting a kitchen and living amid construction for 6 weeks (yes, they actually finished on schedule!) was in every way easier than anybody had ever described to me. Thank you so much, Bradco!

My Dad is 76 going on 25 :) but he is slowly getting older and needed to have his tub somewhat customized to help him get in and out without falling. It really scared me the last time he fell and I really got sick of it. Bradco is in the nieghborhood so dragged dad with me to find out what options we have or if they could even direct us to what were needed to go. My dad was very weary of any type of construction in his house. The mess, not knowing who was going to be working there, in short he would have rather kept the dangerous tub the way it was. I wasn’t having it.

Thank G-d I went with my instincts and walked into Bradco.. Long story short we met with a designer, Rachel and she turned our ugly tub into a beautiful walk-in shower. Rachel added a bench, and chrome bar for my dad to hold on to. All within budget. I am happy and best of all my dad’s  bathroom looks amazing and is SAFE!!!!
Thanks Bradco’s hard work and cleanliness dad wants to redo his kitchen and you know where we are coming!!

1. Problems happen, but its how the problem is solved. A+ for BKB
2. The installers were absolutely immaculate. They treated my father’s home with respect. Everything was clean and in order throughout  the whole installation. This probably the reason they have been in business for 20 years
3. Great staff and the owner Michael is very friendly and gave his input in our job even though we did not have a high budget.

Citysearch Review by Karen6248

It’s been eight months since we gutted and remodeled a full kitchen, master bath, and powder room, plus assorted other changes to our home, and we couldn’t be happier with the results. We even still love the contractor – and how many people can say that after a major remodel?

Our successful experience started with a design consultation at Bradco to discuss ideas for a new kitchen. We had done a major remod on a previous home a few years ago and were still stinging with annoyance and disappointment at the workmanship and the impossibility of getting the job finished. Needless to say, we were gun-shy!

The Bradco designer worked within our stated budget and never tried to “sell up.” When choices were made to upgrade, the decision was always initiated by my husband or me. One thing that surprised and delighted us is that we spent significantly less money for this kitchen than we did with the other contractor, but the quality of materials and installation we got this time are far superior.

We decided to have B&R, the contracting end of the Bradco “family” do our entire remodel, and there was never a moment’s hesitation about the integrity or skill of each man who worked in our home. Although we weren’t living there yet, the B&R men still attempted to keep the place as tidy as the circumstances would allow.

Much to our surprise, Eli, Many, Julio, and all of the others involved in the construction management and on the job labor showed up when they said they would – again, quite remarkable in this field.

We love using our kitchen and baths, and we still haven’t gotten over admiring the results. Of course, like with any other venture such as this, there’s been the occasional need to tweak or fix something. We’ve marveled at the speed of the response from both Bradco and B&R and the good cheer with which they approach any of our subsequent requests. And this is many months since the last invoice was paid in full.

In re-reading what I’ve written I fear I must sound like a shill for the company. That couldn’t be further from the truth. Rather, we just feel so grateful after our earlier remodel experience to have found an organization which does high quality work at reasonable prices, and with the follow through we all want when investing so much time, money, and effort into our homes.

Pros: Responsive, skillful, talented staff

Cons: None

Yelp Review By John H.

So here you have it, I am a real shopper. When we decided to do our kitchen we wanted to find someone who took care of the project from beginning to end. We first spoke to some general contractors and where not that impressed. At first they all come up with a reasonable price but when we researched the cabinet product that had such an attractive price we found that the quality was far below our expectations. When I heard about the Bradco cabinet company I thought I give it a try. I made an appointment with their designer Martin and the process was as good as it gets. They supplied me with custom cabinetry at the fraction of the price other people quoted and of much better quality.
They have an in-house contractor B and R Construction and they worked with me and Martin the Bradco designer hand in hand. Our kitchen is beautiful and we enjoy using all the great features every day. Thank you guys you where great, keep it up there are to few of you around.
John

Design! Construction! & Passion

You hear all those horror stories about redoing this, redoing that. I have to say that I was blown away with the staff at Bradco Kithcen and Bath. I was considering a redo in quite a large downstairs bathroom. I am a female doctor living alone and know the difference between arteries and veins, however knowing what wood to use for the cabinet, product for contertops, I have no idea! I am thrilled to have found this terriffic place to be able to let my gaurd down and not feel pressured for a sale, or degraded for asking questions and getting that ” oh you don’t need to concern yourself with that”. The entire staff made me feel like I was part of their family and only what was good enough for them would be good enough for me! I cannot tell you how inpressed I was with their “green ” knowledge and awareness of what kind of chemicals are used in making of cabinets. I have no idea formaldehyde was used in cabinet making. Well not for Bradco! Not only am I completely satisfied with the job Bradco did for me I have recommened them to a number of others and will continue to do so. Thanks Bradco!

A very happy customer,

SDW
